This annual event enables teacher educators to unpack and practice the work of coaching and supporting beginning teachers to build their instructional skill in a supportive and dynamic environment. The Coaching Institute provides a unique opportunity to work with teacher educators from around the United States to consider the meaning of excellence in K-12 teaching, and identify ways to convey that vision to teacher candidates.
Unpack and practice the work of supporting teacher candidates to build their instructional skill.
Try out practice-based teacher education pedagogies with novice teachers from teacher preparation programs local to the Houston, TX, area.
Learn the professional norms that can make intensive coaching feel uncomfortable, and identify ways to shift them using effective tools and planning.
Anyone who teaches teachers is welcome to participate in the Coaching Institute, including methods course instructors, education foundations instructors, education psychology instructors, and mentor and cooperating teachers in K-12 schools.
Skillful teaching can have a major impact on student learning. Teacher educators owe it to children to provide novice teachers with high-quality professional training so that they can develop strong, equitable instructional skills and use their craft to advance teaching for social justice. To this end, teacher educators offer novice teachers intensive coaching, including delivering constructive critique, pointing out alternative approaches, and providing opportunities to try again, with support.
The 2022 Spring Coaching Institute will begin with a required, four-hour virtual opening session on Friday, May 13, 11:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m. Central Daylight Time (CDT) (9:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m. PDT/12:00–4:00 p.m. EDT).
The main event will take place in person at the C. Baldwin Hotel in Houston, Texas, on Friday, May 20, 2022, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Saturday, May 21, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Participants are responsible for booking and paying for their own travel expenses and accommodations.
The fee for the 2022 Spring Coaching Institute is $950 per person, and includes all programming and materials as well as snacks and lunch both days of the in-person event. Participants are responsible for travel and housing costs.

RegisterYour health and safety are important to us. Currently, TeachingWorks requires that all event attendees be fully vaccinated, including all doses in a series, with an authorized vaccine (Pfizer-BioNTech, Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen, or Moderna) or take a PCR test within 72 hours of the start of the event and provide proof of negative result when checking in. Expectations for wearing masks will be compliant with current public health guidance and University of Michigan campus policies.
